Everyone has heard of a slipped disc but a more descriptive term might be a “broken jelly doughnut”. Because discs don’t really slip out of place since they are held in place as spacers between two vertebrae. But what can happen is the outer ring of the disc may break enough to let the “jelly” part of the disc leak out. If the nucleus of the disc leaks out enough so that it presses on a nerve you will feel extreme pain. If the slipped disc is in your neck, you can feel the pain all the way down to your hand. If the slipped disc is in your lower back, you could feel the pain all the way down to your feet. The good new is that this is a pretty rare occurance. Only 5% of people with back pain have a slipped disc.
