Your shoulder blades don’t  often get the respect they deserve because they allow your arms so much freedom of movement. Freedom  to raise up your arms, to throw a ball or to reach behind you to put on your coat.  These are  three important activities yet  the shoulder blades  are one of the few bones in your body held onto your body  mainly by muscles with only a tiny bit of bone and ligament support!   And since your shoulder blades are held onto your body  mainly by muscles they can be thrown off by muscle imbalances caused by your habits, your work and your posture. And did you know that your  shoulder blades can be the source of headaches as well as stiff necks and shoulder pain?  Permalink:   If  your shoulder blade is not moving correctly, it can be because of muscle imbalances. There  are many muscles that attach to your shoulder blades, so it is important that they all work well together  without having knots or trigger points. Otherwise you can have neck pain, headaches, arm and shoulder pains that never seem to get all the way better. And this is particularly true if you get treated for just one aspect of your pain; if you get treated for headaches and your shoulder blade and it’s muscles are not considered as part of your problem it is likely you may not make a full recovery. Most people require a more thorough approach to look at  not only how your shoulder blades move, but  how the many muscles all work and balance out with one another and whether they have hidden knots or trigger points that you may not know about.  Here is a site to give you a picture of one of these muscles and its companion muscles in the front and side of your neck. Trigger points in muscles can refer pain to  other parts of the body that seem pretty far away from where you have  your pain. One of these muscles that connects to the shoulder blade (scapula) is the trapezius. Trapezius muscle runs from neck to mid back and attaches to the shoulder blade, and this muscle can give you headache pain that occurs in a question mark pattern that can be felt anywhere from your eye brow across your head  to back behind your ear. The trapezius is one of the major muscles of the back and is responsible for moving, rotating, and stabilizing the scapula (shoulder blade) and extending the head at the neck. It is a wide, flat, superficial muscle that covers most of the upper back and the posterior of the neck.

  • headaches on the temples / “tension” headaches.
  • facial, temple, or jaw pain.
  • pain behind the eye.
  • dizziness or vertigo (in conjunction with the sternocleidomastoid muscle)

  • limited range-of-motion.
  • intolerance to weight on your shoulders.

Trapezius Trigger Point Referral Patterns – So if the shoulder blade is not moving correctly, it can aggravate trapezius trigger points leading to referred pain to your head! What causes the shoulder blade to not work right? Slouched posture, prolonged sitting, computer and cell phone use. Tight, shortened chest muscles from  push ups, bench press and pect -flies. Over pumped up pectoralis chest muscles  can happen when people do not put the same effort into exercising the mid back muscles to balance the overly tight commonly exercised chest muscles.
